Incontinence - some facts

Urinary incontinence is the unwanted and involuntary leakage of urine. Normally the bladder stores urine that is continuously produced by the kidneys until it is convenient to urinate, but if there is a problem with any part of the urinary system, incontinence can result.

Some myths about incontinence

Myth: It can’t be managed.

  • Incontinence from surgery: this incontinence may result following surgery such as hysterectomies or prostatectomy

Children’s Incontinence

Bedwetting is involuntary urination while asleep after the age at which bladder control would normally be anticipated. Doctors call this condition, "Nocturnal Enuresis."
There are two types of Nocturnal Enuresis:

  • When after the age of 4 the child the child continues to bed wet at night – Primary Enuresis
  • When a child begins wetting the bed again after having stayed dry for a period of time – Secondary Enuresis

Most instances of bedwetting can be related to a developmental delay, not necessarily caused by emotional or physical issues.

Some of the facts around bedwetting:

  • Bedwetting often runs in the family.
  • Bedwetting usually goes away on its own.
  • Bedwetting that begins abruptly and is accompanied by other symptoms can be a sign of another medical condition, contacting your physician is important.
